EPSRC vacation bursary scheme-2009

The School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering runs a vacation bursary scheme (alongside a similar EPSRC scheme) to provide funding for undergraduate students to gain first-hand positive and practical experience of research in a UK university under the close supervision of an experienced member of academic staff.

If you are interested in pursuing a research degree after your undergraduate studies have finished, or you simply wish to enhance your research potential then this scheme will certainly be of interest to you.

Each project will last for around 10 weeks and will take place in the summer of 2009 and all students will have completed their projects by the 30th September 2009, at the end of the project you will give a short seminar presentation about your research project to other students within the School.

At this stage you need to be thinking of an area of interest/project that is of interest to you, and you can speak to academic staff members about your ideas and seek their support as your potential supervisor. Once you have established your idea you need to complete an application form and submit it to the Graduate School Office, room 1.08a (within Civil Engineering).

Eligibility

To be eligible you should be registered for your first degree and also be in the middle years of your undegraduate degree, that is, in the second year of a BEng or the third year of an MEng degree. If successful in your application you will also receive a stipend of £220 per week.

The French Government

The French Government, through the Embassy of France in Jakarta, has
been providing excellence scholarships to Indonesian citizens for
more than 28 years. In order to pursue its objective to improve
Indonesian human resources, the Embassy of France will offer
scholarships for the year 2009.

Those scholarships are given to government officials, lecturers,
students, with a priority to those involved in a cooperation program
between France and Indonesia, to undertake two kinds of training:

* Master degree
(maximum duration of 2 years)
* Doctoral degree
(maximum duration of 3 years, only on a shared cost basis)
REQUIREMENTS
* Minimum diploma: bachelor degree / S1

Doctoral research opportunities ESRC PhD Studentships

Four ESRC studentships are available from September 2009 tenable for either 1+3 or +3 scheme. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who have a first class or upper second class degree and a Masters in a related discipline to pursue PhD studies in any area of research expertise within the School.

Candidates who have not completed an ESRC-recognised research training masters course will be considered for 1+3 award. Successful 1+3 candidates are required to undertake one of the School's recognised masters courses, followed by three years doctoral research.

ESRC 1+3 and +3 Quota Studentships are available to candidates who are classed as Home student for tuition fee purposes. Fully funded DPhil Studentship in Information Systems

The Information Systems Research Group is offering a fully funded D.Phil position in Oxford University's Computing Laboratory. This position is associated with the EPSRC project "Enforcement of Constraints on XML Streams", under the supervision of Professor Michael Benedikt, which will deal with issues in XML integrity-constraints and stream processing.

The studentship is fully funded (at EU fees level - overseas candidates will need supplementary funding) for 3 ½ years from 1^st January, 2009. Students applying for admittance with a start date of 1^st October, 2009 will receive a guarantee of 3 years funding. It includes a stipend of at least £12,940 per year as well as provision for travel to conferences.

Durham University Doctoral Fellowship

Scheme for 2009/10

The University offers a generous package of support to outstanding doctoral research students through the Durham University Doctoral Fellowship scheme. The scheme provides:

* Full payment of tuition fees at home or overseas rate
* A maintenance stipend at the national rate (£13,290 in 2009/10)
* A research training support grant (£1,000 in 2009/10)
* An allowance to attend the North East local Grad School.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the standard University and department admissions criteria and have applied to the University for admission in the session 2009/10, as a registered research student, to a course of full-time study for a PhD. Students who are already registered for a PhD course are not eligible to apply for an award.
Nature of Awards

Awards will normally be extended for another two years subject to progress being deemed satisfactory by the academic department and the Graduate School's Postgraduate Awards Sub-Committee. If extended, the award would continue to provide a full waiver of fees, a maintenance award at the nationally agreed rate and a research training support grant.

Fellows will be required to participate in a programme of academic activities designed to further enhance their development as researchers. Details of this programme will be provided to Fellowship holders at the start of their programme of study.
Applications and Deadlines

Applicants should submit an application for postgraduate study using the standard on-line application procedure; there is no separate application form. PhD position available at UNESCO-IHE (SSI-2 Project)

Upscaling small-scale land and water system innovations in dryland agro-ecosystems for sustainability and livelihood improvements (SSI-2)

Recently, an interdisciplinary research project was approved by the UNESCO-IHE Partnership Research Fund (UPaRF).

This project will form part of the broader successor programme of SSI, in which the following institutes collaborate: UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (Delft, The Netherlands), University of Dar Es Salaam, University of KwaZulu Natal, Delft University of Technology, the International Water Management Institute, Sokoine University of Agriculture and the Stockholm Resilience Centre.

Within the current project a PhD positions is available, linked to the themes described below. If successful, the PhD degree will be awarded by Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.

Project description

The project focuses on the semi-arid areas of sub-Saharan Africa, where 95% of the total agricultural land is used for rainfed agriculture, water availability is scarce and highly variable, and average yields often remain below 1 ton per ha. The resilience of the farming systems is low as well, due the large (and increasing) variability of the hydro-climatic conditions and a limited capacity to adapt. As a result, crop failure is the norm. Water availability is a key entry point to improve crop productivity in these regions (Falkenmark and Rockström, 2004).

The research and outreach programme of “Smallholder systems innovations in integrated watershed management” (SSI-1, 2004-2008) thus focused on the identification and application of innovative agricultural water management practices that offer opportunities to increase both food security and safeguard environmental integrity. The impact of these innovations on food production and ecosystems has been studied at field and watershed scale at sites in the Thukela river basin in South Africa and the Pangani river basin in Tanzania.

There is a growing awareness that a real transformation of the countryside will only be possible if innovative soil and water technologies and land and water management practices are adopted, and locally adapted, at a large scale and in combination with increased fertilizer use (see e.g. Rijsberman, 2004; Polak, 2005; Rockström et al., 2007). Only then will rural areas be able to transform from their current position of marginalization and poverty to a motor of socio-economic development (Prahalad, 2004).

Since the conditions under which such a transformation may occur, as well as the potential impacts at different scales, are still ill-understood, a new project will focus on the socio-economic and bio-physical conditions and impacts of upscaling these innovations. This new project (SSI-2, 2008-2012) will take note of some new drivers that influence the opportunities for agricultural innovation and rural socio-economic transformation: increasing food prices, increased access to information in the rural countryside, climate change impacts, and the limited access of farmers to energy sources in the face of an increasing global demand for biofuels (e.g., de Wit and Stankiewics, 2006; Uhlenbrook, 2007). The two PhD research projects form part of the broader SSI-2 programme.

PhD Project 1: Water processes at different spatial scales

This research theme addresses the hydrological implications for up-scaling land and water system innovations. The objective is to gain better understanding of the interactions between processes linking local and larger scales.

The analysis focuses on how the dominant hydrological processes may change at different spatial scales. The research builds on the understanding of the hydrological processes gained during SSI-1, with a stronger emphasis on groundwater-surface water interactions and potential implications of/for land management changes.

It is hypothesised that surface-groundwater interactions are critical to the impacts of water system innovations, and that it impacts vary with scale and different physiographic characteristics.

This hypothesis will be verified in the field and the results used for predictive modelling to determine impacts of up-scaled use of WSIs on water quantity and quality for downstream users under different scenarios. The surface-groundwater interactions (including wetlands) are also crucial for the hydrological variability and water resources availability at different scales and, consequently, for the provision of ecosystem services.

Research question: What are the hydrological impacts of small scale farming activities, incl. water system innovations, across different scales? Particular attention will be paid to different types of rainwater harvesting, supplementary irrigation and full scale irrigation.

Methodology: Understanding the hydrological impacts of small scale farming activities across different scales, requires the understanding of the hydrological processes at these scales. This research will take up the small scale hydrological understanding (project 3.1) and investigate the large scale (500-5,000-45,000 km2) hydrological processes through the use of remote sensing data combined with field observations (incl. hydro-chemical and tracers studies). Of particular interest is the groundwater surface water interaction (incl. generation of wetlands) and the impact of this on the downstream water availability (PBWO, 2006). A process-based distributed hydrological model will be developed to investigate different scenarios of uptake and extent of the small scale farming activities.

This study will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Stefan Uhlenbrook, Dr. Jan Willem Foppen, Dr Shreedhar Maskey (UNESCO-IHE), Dr. T.A. Kimaro (UDSM).

The following applies to the position:

• All topics will be carried out in a so-called sandwich construction with different phases at UNESCO-IHE in the Netherlands and field research in Tanzania (with regular contacts with Tanzanian and Dutch supervisors).
• PhD positions are funded with a fellowship for which NUFFIC regulations apply.
• Starting date: April 1, 2009 for 4 years.
• Qualifications: M.Sc. degree (average mark: 80% or above) in a discipline relevant to the topic, e.g. environmental engineering, socio-economics of the water sector, hydrology and water resources.
• The applicants must demonstrate a strong interest and experience in conducting interdisciplinary research.
• The applicant should be willing to co-operated with other researchers in the SSI-2 programme
• The applicants should be willing to co-supervise MSc research projects.
• The applicants must be fluent in English.
• Preferred country of citizenship of the applicants is Tanzania.
• Age: 40 years and below.
• Work experience in relevant fields of studies is desirable.

Doctoral Fellowships at Max Planck Research School for Competition &Innov

The IMPRS-CI offers several Doctoral Fellowships to outstanding students interested in the integration of the three disciplines law, business administration and economics, and the study

The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund (TSCSF) was established as a registered charity in 1997. General information:
CBS offers high scholarships and accepts only top applicants. To be awarded the scholarship, one must be enrolled as a PhD student. To be considered for enrolment, the candidate should have a basic training at the Masters level, and must be fluent in Danish and/or English. Enrolment in the PhD programme furthermore depends on the acceptance of the application, which must include a short project description, usually prepared in co-operation with the Department. This research proposal should contain a presentation of the intended research question, including the theory and methodology expected to be used.Indicative examples of research themes could be:
* The determinants and effects of board composition
* Private equity ownership: causes and consequences
* Causes of the current financial crises: leverage, board failure and compensation bias
* Managing innovation in Multinational Companies,
* Outward FDI from emerging markets
* The role of emerging markets in the global financial crisis
In addition to the research proposal, the application must include a completed compulsory form, copies of a Master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level, brief curriculum vitae (CV), a list of papers and publications, and one copy of a selected written work (e.g. Master’s thesis).
All parts of the application must be submitted in four copies, except the selected written work, which may be submitted in only one copy. Electronic submissions are not accepted.A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years, and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours).
The scholarship includes the waiving of tuition, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 24.118up to DKK 29.125 depending on seniority plus a
pension contributions totalling 17,1 % on 80 per cent of the base salary.The salary level
and appointment is determined by the Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.
A committee of experts in the field in question will assess the applications. The assessment of the applicants will be based on the quality and relevance of the project, including an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to accomplish it. PhD Studentship, University of Cambridge

PhD Studentship, University of Cambridge: History of the Placenta
since 1750

The Centre for Trophoblast Research at the University of Cambridge aims to fund up to three PhD studentships at Wellcome Trust rates starting in October 2009 for three years of full-time research<http://www.trophobl ast.cam.ac. uk/info/students hips.shtml>. We areoffering a project on the history of the placenta.

The placenta has a rich and important past that has yet to attractsustained historical attention. Possible projects could focus on such various aspects as anatomy, physiology and evolution, pathological examination and legal regulation, midwifery, obstetric and lay
practices, and claims as to the placenta's special powers. There is wide scope to choose a topic of interest in a period since 1750 and with an appropriate geographical location.

Supervision will be provided by Martin H. Johnson (Physiology, Development and Neuroscience) and Nick Hopwood (History and Philosophy of Science). The project will benefit from participation in the University's programme of historical research on generation and reproduction and specifically on embryology.

Interested students (UK, EU or overseas) should have at least a high upper second (or equivalent) in a first degree, preferably in the biological sciences, and ideally also a strong performance in a master's in history of science and/or medicine. We invite initial
expressions of interest, including a CV and sample of written work,by 10 December 2008 for a Centre deadline of 9 January and interview
on 28 January 2009.

Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance

CEMFI, Madrid (Spain)

At CEMFI we train students for careers as professional or academic economists. Our graduates acquire the quantitative tools and research skills to work as economists in business, finance, government, and academia.

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI is its highly prestigious Master in Economics and Finance. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.

CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. In previousyears, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed several scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. If new grants are endowed, they will be announced on CEMFI’s web page.

An important distinguishing feature of our Master is that it lasts for two years, the second being essential for shaping the skills of our graduates. The first year consists of basic graduate coursework and some optional subjects. The second year includes specialized courses and research training through a Master thesis. Our ratio of students to faculty is between four and five. Thus we can devote a lot of attention to each student. This is particularly important for the Master thesis, where the faculty provides guidance to a unique degree.

Members of CEMFI’s faculty publish in top journals and are research leaders in their fields. They are also editors of prestigious journals and are key players at leading learned societies such as the European Economic Association and the Econometric Society.

Our Master students get very good jobs as economists. For example, in positions dealing with portfolio and risk management, macroeconomic forecasting, policy evaluation, or microeconomic consultancy. CEMFI has been building a reputation for more than 20 years and a degree from
CEMFI provides a strong signal of quality, regularly confirmed by the market. Moreover, we run an experienced and efficient job placement service.

Students interested in furthering their research training, either because they aim for a professional career with a stronger research content or because they aim for an academic position, will continue to develop their research skills for another three years and complete the
PhD program. Graduates from CEMFI’s PhD program have published papers from their dissertation in top journals and we have an excellent record in the PhD job market.

Admission to the PhD program at CEMFI is through the Master. All students admitted to the PhD program obtain a scholarship, either from an external source or from CEMFI. Scholarship for Masters in Conservation Biology

Scholarship opportunities to study in the USA for:
- Masters Degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management.
- Masters Degrees in Water and Sanitation.
Training has long been a key component of the U.S. governments development
program in Indonesia. USAID/ Indonesia plans to support the tradition
through the Human and Institutional Capacity Development (HICD) program
that will provide academic degree training. The HICD program is structured
in a way that will help individuals acquire the knowledge, skills, and the
capacity to support Indonesias development and the achievement of the
Government of Indonesia/USAIDs objectives.
USAID has awarded a contract to the Academy for Educational Development
(AED), a U.S. non-government organization (NGO) to support the
implementation of the HICD program in Indonesia. AED is now inviting
Indonesian citizens to study for Masters Degrees in the USA in 1)
Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management and 2) Water
and Sanitation.
*1. Masters Degrees in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resources Management.*
Eligible candidates may come from the Ministry of Forestry, Environment,
Development Planning, Research and Development, Finance, Economy or other
related government institutions including provincial and district level
offices and regulators; civil society groups (Biodiversity Conservation
and Natural Resources Management Associations, NGOs and Foundations) ; or
professionals in fields related to sustainable development with
international or local organizations who have strong potential for
leadership, research, education, journalism and consultancy in the same field.
Candidates with experience working in geographical areas with high
biodiversity conservation value will be prioritized. An indicative list
would include Kalimantan, Sumatera, Papua, Sulawesi and NTT.
Every attempt will be made to balance candidate selection by gender.
*2. Masters Degrees in Water and Sanitation.*
Eligible candidates may come from related government Institutions, civil
society groups (Water and Sanitation Associations, NGOs, and Foundations) ,
water and sanitation professionals/ environmental engineers working in the
development sector with international or local organizations, and faculty
from schools of Water and Sanitation/Environm ental Engineering at
accredited Indonesian universities.
Candidates from the following areas in Indonesia will be prioritized:

Aceh, North Sumatera, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Yogyakarta, Central Java and East Java .

Previous affiliation of the institution with USAID whether as a
beneficiary or partner program will be viewed favorably.

Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholars Program

Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program provides expenses for a
four-year course of study toward a bachelors degree for twenty-two
exceptionally able Asian students annually from these countries and
regions: the Peoples Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan,
Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand,
and Vietnam.

Wesleyan is now accepting applications for
participation in the Wesleyan Freeman Asian Scholarship Program.
Twenty-two (22) qualified young men and women will be selected, two (2)
from each of eleven countries and regions The Peoples Republic of
China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines,
Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The chosen
applicants will join 2,700 other Wesleyan undergraduates from
throughout the United States and nearly 50 countries for study with an
outstanding teaching and research faculty in the sciences and
mathematics, the arts, the humanities, and the social and behavioral
sciences.
This program is made possible by Wesleyan University
and the Freeman Foundation, which aims to improve understanding and to
strengthen ties between the United States and the countries and regions
of the Pacific Rim.
Entry into the Wesleyan Freeman Asian
Scholarship Program is highly competitive: only two students will be
selected annually from each country or region. The scholarship covers
costs for tuition, room, and board for four years, and one-time
transportation to and from the United States.
Wesleyan University
is located in Middletown, Connecticut, halfway between New York and
Boston in the historic and colorful New England region of the
northeastern United States. It is a private, nonsectarian, liberal arts
and sciences institution founded in 1831. A number of early Wesleyan
graduates were influential educators and ministers in Asian countries,
and the modern Wesleyan has formal ties to several prominent
universities in Asia. The campus is home to a diverse population of
2,700 undergraduate students, equally divided between men and women,
approximately 28 percent of whom are of African, Asian, or Hispanic
descent, and nearly 160 students from foreign countries.
Approximately
190 graduate students, a number of whom are from Asian countries, are
pursuing advanced degrees, principally in the sciences, mathematics,
and music.
APPLICATION
Interested students also must submit a
written application that includes background information, two essays, a
secondary school/junior college transcript, recommendations from two
teachers and one counselor, a peer reference, and results of any
standardized national examinations administered during the secondary
school/junior college years. Officials from Wesleyan and the Freeman
Foundation will travel to Asia and conduct interviews of finalists in
their home countries in February or March. All application materials
are to be postmarked no later than January 1. (For students in the
Philippines, we recommend mailing your application earlier or using a
courier service.) Applications are available from secondary

the Freeman Asian Scholarship is different from the Common Application
